Why Are Most Harley-Davidson Motorcycles So Loud?

They second modification used to be a carburetor jet kit to remove the flat spot emission settings put in their bikes but they are all fuel injected now, so that isn’t needed. I just sold my Road King Classic with pipes that had stamped on the underside "For Racing Off Road Use Only". Try as I may, I couldn’t sneak out of the neighborhood early in the morning without being noticed.

All the necessary O2 sensors and adapters were included, and a partial heat shield ensured the exhaust temperatures stayed in check. The fact that the entire package was manufactured in the USA was the cherry on top. I measured a 25% increase in volume, but trust me, it feels even more. It adds an aggressive edge to the bike, making it feel far more imposing.

Nearly every Harley owner does the very same first modification. Their rational; they want cars to HEAR them coming. Actually, they want EVERYone to hear them coming to see they are riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

At that point, it's likely not enough time for the car to react safely. This challenges the perception of why motorcycles have to be so loud for safety reasons. Similarly, the compact size of a motorcycle leaves little room for equipment that can dampen the engine noise. Adding a muffler to a motorcycle exhaust system reduces noise, but its impact is limited due to the small size required for motorcycles.

Granted there are assholes that like to knock out your side mirrors but loud bikes definitely make themselves aware of other drivers when their cross section visibility is much less than a car. The fact is, motorcycles are unsafe mostly because of drivers who just don’t give a shit and feel entitled to the whole road. Some CARS louder than others too.and JUST like cars, the bikes also have a choice of exhaust options as well as accessory change-outs. As long as they run and roll away, I don’t mind so much. Living on a street where a throttle dope lives can be annoying. Then there is the guy who has a bike that has to be started 20 times before it keeps running along with the loud cursing at 1155 PM. Some guy used to have an old car that he’d cruise in at about 0100 AM.

Anyone who’s ever witnessed a poker run knows that Harley-Davidson motorcycles are really, really loud. And since not everyone thinks that’s a good thing, in recent years, click reference there have been efforts to stifle them.
